Entrevista a Ola Englund (Fearedsed en youtube, miembro de Feared)

El forero MetalEduMalmsteen nos ha obsequiado con una entrevista a este afamado guitarrista, conocido youtuber, incansable metalero, y portentoso guitarrista, tanto en la faceta en grupo (Feared), como en la solista en youtube.
No olvidemos que hablamos de un top youtuber mundial, reconocidísimo en la web y en páginas famosas de shred y guitarristas solistas, así como de grupos metal.

Ola Englund(Ola): Lo primero, hola!

MEM: Hace cuanto tiempo tocas la guitarra Ola? Has tocado algún otro instrumento?

Ola: Bueno, me forzaron a tocar el piano con 8 años, estuve algunos años con ello. No me gustaba del todo, cuando tenía 12-13 años empecé a practicar con la guitarra de mi padre. Empecé con el viejo riff de Smoke on the water, nunca te equivocas en él! desde eso han pasado 16-17 años de tocar la guitarra. Realmente no progresé hasta 1997 cuando escuché a Dream Theater, ahí empecé a practicar técnica de verdad!

MEM: Cuáles son tus mayores influencias?

Ola: Diría que las mayores influencias a la hora de tocar la guitarra serían en este orden de importancia:

Kurt Cobain- diría que el es el motivo por el que empecé a tocar la guitarra en primer lugar. Sus canciones son muy fáciles y es un buen comienzo para los que empiezan en la guitarra.

Dimebag Darrel- MUY poco después de descubrir a Nirvana y observé a Pantera, desde eso, Dimebag ha sido mi mayor influencia al tocar. Puedes escucharme ideas de Dimebag aquí o allí.

John Petrucci- Esto fué cuando empecé en serio con la guitarra, me compraba todos los libros de tabs y me aprendía sus canciones.

Después de eso escucé bandas que me han influenciado (como Testament, Nevermore,etc) pero no igual que las otras tres.

MEM: Se observa que tu técnica es limpia y muy demoledora! Cuántas horas al día practicas?

Ola: No tantas como quisiera Debería dar las gracias de que todavía puedo tocar. Normalmente toco al grabar o componer canciones. También hay veces que me siento y toco por 6 horas seguidas, pero es muy difícil disfrutar de tocar cuando tienes un trabajo y una familia que mantener.

MEM: Qué técnicas usas regularmente?

Ola: Para rítmicas, intento hacer downpicking siempre que puedo, pero he mejorado mi alternate de forma que no se note casi si pico para abajo o arriba, se ve en mis vídeos que angulo la púa de forma diferente, que por alguna razón funciona bien con los upstrokes.

Para solos, use mucho legato, no me intereso en el shred tanto con el sweep y esas largos licks de alternate picking, soy un bastardo muy vago

MEM: Qué te inspira al componer?

Ola:MMM... diría que la respuesta obvia es mi mujer y mi niño. Pero, seamos sinceros lo hacía antes de eso, así que diría que son las ganas eternas de crear riffs y traer toneladas de música al mundo y riffs pesados!

Mem: Qué piensas de las letras de Feared)?

Ola: En la mayoría hablamos de temas serios, la mayoría no llega al 80% y estás no dependen de mi estado. Hablamos de temas jodidos o trágicos y me imagino en la historia. Prefiero hablar de personajes que de la depresión de mi molesta vida (que va muy bien, así que e algún lado intentó buscar esa pena)

MEM: Describirías tus albums con Feared?

Ola: Hay un album y un EP que ya ha salido, en 2011 saldrá otro!

MEM: QUé temas usas para las letras de Feared?

Ola: Hablamos de historias jodidas, los niños ed Uganda, suicidios, la niña que de VERDAD amaba a su padre, etc.

MEM: Qué hay de tus otras bandas actuales?

Ola: estoy en Scarpoint y en una banda de doom llamda Sorcerer, Scarpoint acaba de sacar el álbum "The Mask of sanity", un single con las voces de Messugah, Nightwish, Evergrey Hipocrisy, Soilwork, entre otras llamadas "Open your eyes" (abre tus ojos). Escuchadlas en YouTube, el album impresiona a todos!

Sorcerer es una banda de los 80, nos llamamos en una reunióny me llamaron desde Alemania para unirme a ellos. La reunión cumplió las expectativas y los fans pidieron más así que, así que intentaremos grabar y componer un album para 2011.

MEM: Acerca de tu gear? (Amplis, púas, cuerdas, guitarras...)

Ola: Uso guitarras Ibanez, las RGD concretamente, cuerdas Dáddario 10-60 para 7 cuerdas y 12-60 para 6. Mis púas son Tortex Sharp 1.5 mm, en vivo uso el Axe FX en mi rig, el equipo perfecto en directo! He probado muchos amplis, y no me quedo con uno fijo, voy cogiendo otros y los voy probando!

MEM: Tu ampli favorito?

Ola: Me hacen esta pregunta todo el rato! Durante 7 años he tenido mi ENGL Savage y no necesito nada más. También le tengo cariño a el Dual Rectifier (tengo el primero desde 1996) y es uno de mis favoritos, porque le conozco por dentro y por fuera! Me hace tocar perfectamente!

MEM: Acerca de tu endorsement con DAR AMPS?

Ola: Ya me topé con ellos antes, cuando vinieron a Suecia con Fredrik Thordendal. En noviembre de 2010 me siguieron el canal y me pidieron que me uniera a ellos.Tienen mucho que dar y son buenos tíos! Deberían ser una fuerza reconocida. Su amp Forza Quattro tiene mucha articulación y un gran sonido, gracias a las Big Tubes!

MEM: Qué recomiendas al ecualizar?

Ola: Cuanto más simple mejor! Al grabar vigila la posición del micro y juego con la eq en ella. El resultado será mejor. Es difícil especificar y depende del ampli que uses. El 80% de las veces que grabo uso solo un filtrador pasivo para las frecuencias de entre 6000-8000 hz. Si uso posteriormente eq externas reviso estas áreas: Muchos amps tienen frecuencias de entre 150 250 Hz que intento flitrar un poco. No remuevo las frecuencias de 700 hz porque lo haría sonar vacío. El potenciómetro de presencia de algunos amps se usa para las frecuencias de 4000hz así que ahí presto atención.

MEM: Utilizas un TS al hacer solos y rítmicas que diferencias hay entre tu tono de sólos y las rítmicas?

Ola: Sólo añado un toque de gain en el pedal

MEM: Qué quieres para un buen tono?

Ola: Un buen sonido lleno y centrado. Que se le corten los medios y siga siendo lleno. Puedes imaginarte mi sonido ideal al ver mis vídeos.

MEM: Te odian los vecinos? xD (como a todos los guitarristas)

Ola: Sí, y yo a ellos, simples matemáticas

MEM: Qué piensas del panorama del metal actual?

Ola: Hay mucho telento ahí fuera desperdiciado. Lo mío son los 90 Testament, Pantera, Machine Head con montones de riffs. No me gusta el Djent metal pero va bien para grupos como Periphery.

MEM: Qué estilos de música sueles escuchar?

Ola: Depende, bandas sonoras. De videojuegos, pelis... acabo de estar escuchando la banda sonora de Tron Legacy y la del juego Outcast. Me gusta aí también el jazz, clásica, metal, rock...

MEM: Aquí está la última pregunta, cuánto te he molestado? :P

Ola: Qué? No soy un chico fácil de molestar! Me molestaría que me hicieses escuchar a Justin Bieber durante 10 minutos

MetalEduMalmsteen (MEM):Well, we are going to talk with Ola Englund, famous youtuber and the lead guitarist at his FEARED band, he seems to be a nice guy, famous by his riffs and his amazing playing, so lets ask him some metal questions!!!! \m/

Ola Englund (Ola):First of all hi !

MEM:- For how many time have yo been playing the guitar Ola? Have you played other instruments yet?

Ola:Well I was forced to play the piano when I was 8. Did that for a couple of years. Didn't like it at all, when I was 12-13 I started to borrow my dads guitar. Started with the good ol smoke on the water riff. You can't fail with that riff! So that makes it what like 16-17 years of playing guitar. But I didn't really progress until I started listening to Dream Theater around 1997. That's when I started to practice technique for real.



MEM:- Which are your biggest influences?

Ola:I would say the biggest that have influenced me and my guitar playing it would be in this order:
Kurt Cobain - I would say that he's the reason I even tried guitar in the first place. The songs are easy as hell to learn and is a good starting point for beginners.
Dimebag Darrel - VERY short after discovering Nirvana I discovered Pantera and Dimebag has since then been the biggest influence in my playing. You can probably hear me ripping off Dimebag here and there
John Petrucci - This is where I started to progress as a guitarist. I bought every tab book and started learning every song.

After this Isure there has been a lot of bands that I've been influenced by(like Nevermore, Testament etc) but not in the same aspect as Nirvana, Pantera or Dream Theater.



MEM:- We can see clearly that your technique is clean and crushing! How many ours a day do you practice usually?

Ola:Today I don't practice at all. I have my youth to thank for that I still can play. I usually only play guitar when I'm recording a video or writing a song. But occasionally it happens that I sit with a guitar and play for 6 hours straight. It's hard when you have a family and a job to get time just to enjoy guitar playing.

- Which techniques do you use regularly?

For rhythm, downpicking on most of my stuff, BUT I've practiced my up-strokes to the point where it doesn't matter to much if I'm alternating or not. If you check my videos you can probably see that I'm angling the pick backwards when playing. For some reason that just works very well with upstrokes.

For leads I use a lot of legato. I'm not a huge fan of shredding so I'm not to good at sweeping and long fast alternate picking runs. I'm just a lazy bastard I guess .


MEM:- What inspires you to compose?

Ola:Hmmm... The obvious answer would be my wife and kid. But who am I kidding, I wrote stuff before I had them!
I guess I have a constant hunger for creating heavy riffs ! Bringing the broots as you say nowadays.


MEM:- What do you usually think about Feared´s Lyrics?

Ola:Some are about serious stuff, some aren't. 80 % of the lyrics are written by me so it depends in what mood I'm in. I usually find a fucked up story from the news and then just picture myself in that situation. So i'm more for telling a story about a character rather than writing depressed shit about my life(but the way my life rules so I have to find depression elsewhere)


MEM- Can you describe your albums with Feared?

Ola:There is one album and one EP out. There is a new album coming out in 2011.



MEM:- Which topics do you use when you write Feared´s Lyrics?

Ola:As I wrote above, I just find random fucked up stuff in the world, stories about the children in Uganda, suicidal s, the girl who really(I mean REALLY) loved her father etc.

MEM:- What´s about with your other present bands?

Ola:I'm currently in a band called Scarpoint and in a doom band called Sorcerer. Scarpoint is just about to release their album "The Mask of Sanity", there is a single out with the singers from Meshuggah, Nightwish, Evergrey, Hypocrisy, Soilwork among others called "Open your eyes". Check it out on youtube it's an awesome song. The album kicks all kinds of ass!

Sorcerer is a band from the 80's. They where asked to do a reunion gig in germany and asked me to join. The gig went over the bands expectations and the fans just wanted more so now they're in the process of writing songs for a new album. Probably going to be out in 2011.


MEM:- About your gear? (amps, strings, guitars, picks...)

Ola:Currently I'm in a Ibanez phase so I currently play Ibanez RGD guitars. I use Ddadario strings from 10-60 for my 7-string and 12-60 for my 6-string. I play Dunlop Tortex Sharp 1,5mm picks. Currently I just own a Axe Fx rig that I use live. It's really the perfect touring rig. I've owned lots of amps through the years but I'm not that guy that settles for an amp when I like the sound, I like to try them all!


MEM:- Your favourite amp of all you have tried?

I get this question all the time! And it's hard to answer cause that changes every year. I owned a Engl Savage for 7 years and I thought I would never use anything else but then again I've always had so much love for the Dual Rectifier(got my first in 1996). So I would say that I love the Dual Rectifier of all the amps cause I know it inside and out. It suits my playing just perfect.


MEM:- About your DAR Amps Endorsement?

Ola:I've met the guys at DAR a couple of times when they've been to sweden to work with Fredrik Thordendal. They have followed my Youtube channel for some time and asked me to joing their team this november 2010. They are just awesome guys and they got so much stuff happening. They are truly a force to be reckoned with. And their Forza amp totally rules, a very articulate amp thanks to the big power tubes.


MEM:- I saw that you use a TS for rythms and leads, which difference do you make in your leads?

Ola:Depends on what amp I'm using. For leads I put in a touch of gain on the pedal.


MEM:- What do you suggest about eq?

Ola:I suggest that you should keep it as simple as possible! If you're recording try to EQ with the microphone placement. The end result will be so much better. And specifics in post eq is really hard and totally depends on which amp you record. 80% of the times I record an amp I only use a low pass filter set around 6000-8000 hz. If I use post eq I'm often checking these areas: A lot of amps have a rumble around 150-250 hz that I usually try to remove a bit. Also I would remove some at 700 hz but be careful not to remove to much, It will make the sound hollow. At 4000 hz I check the levels as well, a lot of amps have their presence knob set around 4000 hz so use the presence knob to remove or add to this frequency.


MEM:- What do you want in a good tone?

Ola:A meaty middy sound. A sound can be scooped but still sound full and meaty. You can hear my ideal sound I'm after in most of my videos.


MEM:- Do your neighbours hate you? (as all guitar players xD)

Ola:They hate me, and I hate them Simple math.


MEM:- What do you think about world´s current metal?

Ola:There is so much talent out there that doesn't get noticed and it's a shame. I like traditional 90's metal, testament, pantera, machine head with lots of riffing. I'm not a big fan of this Djent thing going on but it works for bands like Periphery.


MEM:- At which music styles do you usually listen to?

Ola:Depends, I listen a lot to movie soundtracks as well as game sound tracks. Lately I've been listening a lot to Tron the movie sound track as well as Outcast the game sound track. But I love rock, metal, some jazz, classical.



MEM:- Here is the last interview´s question, How much have i upset you? :P

Ola:What?! I'm not an easy guy to make upset! Maybe if you made me listen to Justin Beiber for 10 minutes I would get upset.
